- About TalentPlanner
World of Warcraft Talent Planner v2.11
TalentPlanner adds planning capabilities to the talent frame. Left clicking on a talent increases (and right clicking decreases) your planned rank for that talent. Control left clicking a talent actually buys it if you have a point. Note that I am not responsible for any talents you accidentally buy! I've made every effort to make the interface intuitive and have tested it extensively, but until you get used to it it may be a bit disorienting.
The talents are color coded to indicate their status (see below) and a description of the planned rank is added to the tooltip. It's similar in nature to the talent calculators on the Blizzard website, but slightly more complicated because it needs to show you not only what talents you've planned but also what you currently have. The bottom right numbers are your current rank/max rank. The bottom left number is your goal rank.
Talent Planner no longer depends on the Blizzard web calculators. Given that they are not updated frequently and that they tend to introduce more errors and typos than they fix I am no longer using them. The description text for the planned ranks is now derived from the game itself. This means that if Blizzard changes a rank of a talent that none of my characters has but does not modify the rank that they do have or rank 1 for talents they don't have, I might miss it. But with the patch notes in hand and the fact that changes to talents tend to affect every rank of the talent, this approach will be much easier to maintain and much more accurate. Please report any inconsistencies you find!
As of v2.6, Talent Planner is only half-localized in German. I don't have access to a deDE client, and as I am now using game data, I cannot support localization by myself. If someone is interested in localizing Talent Planner, I can provide the web script to get a "baseline" talent set from the web and the addon I wrote that will compare that set against the data in-game. It should be relatively easy to obtain accurate, localized talent data using those tools.
There are several states a talent can be in, each with its own color.
If you do not currently have points to spend:
Grey: You have not planned any ranks in this talent but you could do so. Blue: You have planned some ranks in this talent, but not to its maximum. Purple: You have planned to max this talent out. Gold: You have maxed out this talent. Red: You have more ranks in this talent than you had planned.
If you have one or more points to spend:
Cyan: You have not planned any ranks in this talent, but you could still spend a point on it if you want. Green: You have planned some ranks in this talent and can now spend a point on it.
Slash commands:
/tp or /planner Enable/disable the mod.
/tp or /planner reset Clears the talent goals for the current character.
/tp or /planner current Sets the talent goals for the current character to be whatever talents they currently have. It's probably a good idea to do this the first time you log in with a character.
/tp or /planner save <name> Saves the current build set under the name <name>. If there is already a saved set with that name, this will overwrite it.
/tp or /planner load <name> Loads the build set saved as <name>. This will overwrite your current build.
/tp or /planner delete <name> Deletes the set saved as <name>.
/tp or /planner list Lists the saved sets for the current character.
Future plans:
1. Make the colors configurable. Some may not agree with my color choices, seeing as how I have no artistic sense whatsoever.
2. Allow for alt-viewing. Currently it only shows the tree for the current character. It would be a pain to store all the textures and whatnot in order to be able to view one character's talent goals on another character in the normal graphical talent pane, but perhaps a text listing would work.
3. Allow for all three talent pages to be seen at once.

russleeiv saidI love this and always use it, but would it be possible to add a "buy all" option for respec-ing max level characters and/or when you only have the number of points planned that you actually have? This would be icing on top, you have already made it pretty hard to screw up but I still do it every once in a while anyway and this would make it a lot easier not to.
Awesome mod
Thanks for all the hard work

thegabbert saidHrm... It'd be very easy for people to buy the wrong talents with a feature like that, but I'll play with the idea and see if I can't make it work relatively smooth...

Bigshot saidWhat ever happened to your plans to display all three trees at one time, and possibly even do cross-character database?

thegabbert saidVersion 2.10.2 is up. It fixes a bug that prevents the mod from working at all for female characters under the German client.

Balsta saidThis may be a bit much but I have been forever trying to find a mod that would let you plan talents while showing you what a specific talent build does to your dps etc based on your current gear.
is this possible?

thegabbert saidIt's certainly possible, but it's a bit outside the scope of this mod. Mods like TankPoints typically take specific talents into consideration, because not every talent affects specific stats like DPS, so a mod more like that might be what you need.

Ragingkid saidWoot, that was fast. You pwn! xD
I'm not the biggest fan of the idea of seeing all 3 talent panes at once, unless it's nice and compact, otherwise have a "lite" version. May not be comin' out soon or whatnot.... but hey, just saying.

thegabbert saidYeah, once I stopped using the online talent calculators and started getting data from in-game, my update process went from days to minutes. I literally just have to log in to each of my characters once (I have one of each class) and then use a diff-viewer to identify and verify the changes my updater mod has found. Then I read over the patch notes to make sure I caught everything, and up they go. :)
I'm not comfortable with the idea of maintaining both a single pane and a multi pane version (I maintain code at work with two simultaneous working versions, and it's obnoxious to have to write every patch twice), but I will consider making the UI switchable.

Dooble saidCompletely broken with 2.3. The Talent page isn't even readable in any way, it just shows up as a page completely blank, 4 tabs at the bottom but do nothing when you click them and are not even appearing as normal. Please update, I love this mod.

thegabbert saidUnfortunately, no there isn't a script to update from the Blizzard web calculators anymore because I stopped using them as a source a while ago; they were wildly inaccurate and updated way too slowly.
That said, if you know the exact changes you're looking to make, you can manually edit WebData.lua. It's not terribly pretty, but if you search a bit you should be able to find the talents you're looking for and make the changes yourself.
There were a couple talent changes put out recently, but since major functionality was still intact, and seeing as how I quit playing WoW a couple months ago, I haven't posted an update. But I recently started playing again and word has it that 2.3 will break major functionality, so I will post a 2.2.3 update tonight and work on getting a 2.3 update ready for when the patch comes out.

darthfang saidIs there a way for us to update the talent descriptions by ourself? like a script that grabs them from the blizz website and shoves them into a nice .lua, or do we need to wait for updates?
